  • For nearly a quarter of the Uranian year, the sun shines directly over each pole, putting the other half of the planet into a long, dark winter.


  • Uranus' magnetic axis is tilted nearly 60 degrees from the planet's axis of rotation, and is also offset from the center of the planet by one-third of the planet's radius


  • Uranus has two sets of rings


  • Inner system consists of nine rings, discovered in 1977, and consists mostly of narrow, dark rings


  • Uranus has 27 known moons, named for characters from the works of William Shakespeare or Alexander Pope


  • How Uranus Got its Name
    Uranus got its name when William Herschel tried unsuccessfully to name his discovery Georgian Sidus after King George III; but instead the planet was named for Uranus, the Greek god of the sky.
